Tapes n Tapes The Loon Music Review
By: Jack McIntyre

Tapes n Tapes have released an excellent album in The Loon. The group of four hail from Minneapolis, and are now being heard around the world. It is indie/rock, and is probably one of the best bands in the genre.

The album opens with Just Drums, which gets straight down to business. It is an upbeat song, and gets the album going nicely. For the next forty minutes or so, the music speeds up, slows down, gets hard, and softens. When all that has been packed in, The Loon has been created.

The nest track of note is Insistor. The guitar and bass work in this track is something to be admired. It has a "Western" sound, and rolls along with a bit of pace behind it. The lyrical style is excellent, if a little intense. This is the first track with a lot of potential from the release.

Crazy Eights is another great piece of music. In its opening seconds, it has established itself as a rock song. Then, the tune develops into a great catch sound. The track swings between light and heavy styling throughout, with ease. It is great to listen to.

Cowbell is a track with huge potential. The guitar throughout the track, combined with the chorus, produces that sound, the sound of success. This is one track that is being heard around the world, with success.

10 Gallon Ascots slows the album down a bit, before building itself into an excellent piece. As with the rest of the album, it fluctuates between slow melodies and hard, fast choruses. This style works very well for Tapes n Tapes. The lyrical genius of Josh Grier again shines through in this track.

The final track on the album, Jakov's Suite, is a great closing track, its only drawback being that it leaves the listener wanting so much more! It opens with a great riff, and rocks on for a while, before slowing down for the second half, where the lyrics kick in.

This album has a very diverse range of sounds, both between the tracks, and within them. It's a great album to listen to, leaving no way for the listener to stop it.

Tapes n Tapes are an indie band, and as a result of this, the album has been quite hard to find. It is finding its way into a few more outlets now, but it is not, and will never be, a mainstream act.

I give it 7.5 out of 10
